This is one of my favorite saying of Christ. It is written in your law. I write this article because it is time to defend civil and common law from the religious law. There is the danger to face Sharia, the Islamic law, even in Europe. Jesus said this referring to the religious law of Moses. For example it is written in the law of Moses, he who commits adultery should put to death.
Leviticus 20. 10. And the man that committeth adultery with [another] man’s wife, [even he] that committeth adultery with his neighbour’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.
Let us see now the story of the sinful woman as it is given in John.
John 8. Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. 2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. 3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, 4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. 5 Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? 6 This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with [his] finger wrote on the ground, [as though he heard them not]. 7 So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. 8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. 9 And they which heard [it], being convicted by [their own] conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, [even] unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. 10 When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? 11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
It is written in your law that the transgressor of the law must put to death. This is why they killed Christ. It was written in their law. Jesus was operating on the Sabbath day and for sure, he stole a donkey.
My personal understanding is that Christ delivered the law of freedom through love and forgiveness. The people don’t have any more the obligation to follow ancient written laws. They don’t have to kill the unbeliever or the transgressor. Christians failed to get the message and they continue to kill their enemies of faith. They believe that Christ came to reinforce the law of Moses. Christians still are glorifying the law and not Christ. The prophecies were written about Christ but the promised peace did not arrive on earth. People continue to kill according the law of a very jealous God. Islam took over asking from believers to kill the unbeliever. Religious wars were the consequence of these ideas.
What it is written on the law of Moses? It is a blessing if you follow it and a curse if you don’t follow it. Deuteronmy 11. 26. Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse; 27 A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you this day: 28 And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the LORD your God.
“After Moses has delivered the commandments and ordinances, he tells the people in clear and forthright terms that if they want to succeed and prosper under God’s guiding hand, they will obey the Law. If, however, they disobey, they will be cursed to experience horrible and excruciating suffering. Deuteronomy 28 is key to understanding the entire theology of the book, for here the “blessings and cursings” are set out in graphic terms, as Moses tells the people:
Cursed shall you be. . . . The Lord will send upon you disaster, panic, and frustration in everything you attempt to do until you are destroyed. . . . The Lord will make the pestilence cling to you until it has consumed you. . . . The Lord will afflict you with consumption, fever, inflammation, with fiery heat and drought, and with blight and mildew. . . . The Lord will cause you to be defeated before your enemies; . . . Your corpses shall be food for every bird of the air and animal of the field. . . . The Lord will afflict you with the boils of Egypt, with ulcers, scurvy, and itch, of which you cannot be healed. The Lord will afflict you with madness, blindness, and confusion of mind. (Deut. 28:16–28)”
It is interesting how the books of Old Testament ends with the words of prophet Malachi.
Malachi 4. 5. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: 6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.
Christians fulfilled this prophecy of Malachi by anathematizing their fellow Christians at every synod just for theological reasons. Even today in the east Orthodox Church they read these anathemas against their enemies of faith.
So, Jesus forgave this woman and he did not apply the law of Moses on her. This was not the only case when Jesus transgressed the law of Moses. It is said as well,
Matthew 15. 10. And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: 11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.
Christians can eat any food they like, even pork which is forbidden by the law of Moses.
Of course Christians do not follow the Sabbath day, because the Lord Christ said:
Matthew 12. 8. For the Son of man is Lord even of the Sabbath day.
All the people who believed in Christ, who didn’t know and didn’t follow the law of Moses, according to the scripture are under the curse.
John 7. 43 So there was a division among the people because of him. 44 And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him. Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him? 46 The officers answered, Never man spake like this man. 47 Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived? 48 Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him? 49 But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.
It is clear that Jesus did not follow the law of Moses, neither Christians did so. For this Jesus is cursed according to Paul.
Galatians 3.10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed [is] every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
Christ by being cursed, died and by being God arose and redeemed the people from the curse.
Galatians 3. 13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed [is] every one that hangeth on a tree:
It is obvious that the law of Moses is not the law of Christ. When the Jews questioned the blind who had his eyes opened, he said to them:
John 9 . 27 He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear [it] again? will ye also be his disciples? 28 Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses’ disciples.
Jesus himself calls the law of Moses, your law, so not his.
John 8.17 It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.
John 10. 34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
The same as the law of Moses was not Pilates law.
John 18 .31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:
That time the law of order was the Roman law and not the law of Moses. But the Christians believed in a new law, the law of liberty, as it is mentioned in James.
James 2 .12 So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.
Paul says the same when confronted from some believers to the law of Moses about circumcision.
Galatians 5. Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. 2 Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.
The same view about circumcision holds and the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas.
53 His disciples said to him, «is circumcision useful or not?» He said to them, «If it were useful, their father would produce children already circumcised from their mother. Rather, the true circumcision in spirit has become profitable in every respect.»
The «Scholars’ Translation» of the Gospel of Thomas by Stephen Patterson and Marvin Meyer
I believe that the strongest message of Christ is the freedom from the law of Moses, from the law of blood sacrifices and the law of revenge. Christ comes for forgiveness, and talks for love. The God of the Hebrew bible is a Jealous God. Deuteronomy 5.9 for I the Lord your God am a jealous God…
This for the scripture doesn’t mean that Christians shall kill, steal, lie and commit adultery. If they follow these commandments according to Christ they will enter in to eternal life. Mathew 19.16, This commandments are given now not with the fear of the curse, not with the fear from a jealous God, but through the love from the son of man. Christians don’t have to follow Sabbath or sacrifices and rituals but through love and human logic they are called to live in harmony and not in war.
Christians did not follow the message of love but they shed the blood of their enemies on earth. Humanity was not freed from the curse of the jealous God. After 2000 years, the religions of the bible, Christianity and Islam are talking about love, but they have failed to bring peace in the world. Instead these religions in the name of God they have been killing the unbelievers.
So I finish with the words of Bart D. Ehrman from his book God’s Problem. How the Bible Fails to Answer Our Most Important Question— Why We Suffer.
“If God had come into the darkness with the advent of the Christ child, bringing salvation to the world, why is the world in such a state? Why doesn’t he enter into the darkness again? Where is the presence of God in this world of pain and misery? Why is the darkness so overwhelming?
Why are the sick still wracked with unspeakable pain? Why are babies still born with birth defects? Why are young children kidnapped, raped, and murdered?
I don’t “know” if there is a God; but I think that if there is one, he certainly isn’t the one proclaimed by the Judeo-Christian tradition, the one who is actively and powerfully involved in this world.”
If we are asking about God, having in mind the religions of the bible, we will be confronted with our human logic. After 2000 years people have not see the Good Father God, the One that Christ was teaching. We don’t know what Jesus was writing in the ground when he forgave the sinful woman. Maybe there was an answer. From the story given in the scripture, we have to say for the sinful woman or the sinful man, for the cursed people who did not follow the law of Moses, in the name of Christ, – they shall not put to death”. They shall not put to death, just because it is written in your law. We don’t care what is written from Moses or what is written from Mohamed, hundreds years ago. We as civilized people of a new era for humanity have developed a legal system that applies to all people, regardless religion. We have to defend our civilization from the ideas of the past. Enough with the curse.
